Today’s global organizations are seeking young professionals with genuine international experience and the abilityto operate successfully across cultural, political and linguistic boundaries.

The Scholar Ship is a semester-long academic program aboard a dedicated passenger ship that traverses the globe as an oceangoing campus. Students and staff from around the world come together to form a transnational learning community designed to develop their intercultural competence and to form a lifetime of friendships.

An international education initiative, The Scholar Ship was developed in collaboration with seven international universities and a host of multinational organizations. The program’s Consortium of Academic Stewards collaborates on the quality oversight and accreditation of all academic offerings and standards. Academic programs offered by The Scholar Ship meet the same quality standards as those on the campuses of the Consortium’s member institutions:

  • Al Akhawayn University, Morocco
  • Cardiff University, United Kingdom
  • Fudan University, China
  • Macquarie University, Australia
  • Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico
  • University of California, Berkeley, USA
  • University of Ghana, Ghana

During a 16-week semester, students pursue numerous opportunities through academic field study, shore excursions and independent travel. The port program is highly integrated into the academic program, making for a sophisticated and experiential learning experience. Onboard, students are immersed in a multicultural living environment. The international student body and staff form a learning community that integrates academic, cultural and social experiences in programs that would be virtually impossible to duplicate elsewhere.

Through the California [Community] Colleges for International Education (CCIE), The Scholar Ship is awarding grants exclusively to students from CCIE member campuses of the California Community College system for the January 2008 voyage. These diversity grants range from 2,500 USD to 10,000 USD.

January 2008 Voyage

The January 2008 Scholar Ship voyage will embark from Hong Kong and sail westward on a itinerary through Asia, Africa, South America and Europe.

The Grants

The Scholar Ship is strongly committed to having a high-quality student population that is diverse, both culturally and socio-economically. To achieve this goal, The Scholar Ship has created a general fund to help make the opportunity of a lifetime a reality for everyone interested and qualified to participate in The Scholar Ship program.
These awards will cover only a portion of the program fees, travel costs, and personal spending required to participate in the program.
Grants will be awarded to students with a demonstrated record of academic achievement and economic need. Students interested in becoming a candidate for a grant must complete a Letter of Interest, submit the Application for Admission, and present their academic transcript(s) (translated to English, if necessary) before 1 October 2007.
If you are accepted into the program through a conditional or definitive offer, the selection committee will conduct a telephone interview with you to conclude their consideration of your letter of interest for a grant.
Whether you are awarded a grant or not, you will be required to complete the admission process to successfully enroll in The Scholar Ship program, as outlined below:
   1. Completed application for admission, including essay
   2. Official academic transcript (sealed, original by post; translated to English, if necessary)
   3. Completed Academic Reference form
   4. Completed Academic and Disciplinary Status form
   5. Evidence of English-language proficiency (if English is not your native tongue)
